2020 Gober & Freinbichler Vineyard Project 004 Blaufränkisch: Burgenland, Austria

Tasting Notes

Vineyard Project 004 Blaufrankish really sets the stage with its magenta like color in the glass. Bright red fruits on the nose such as raspberries, strawberries, vegetal notes of rhubarb, and hints of flowers are met with dark blackberries and a hint of smoke, earth, and spice. This wine is oh so juicy and refreshing, but with just enough of a tannin structure to pair with a filet of steak. The wines in the Vineyard Project series tend to show beautifully with a slight chill, or better yet a cellar temperature, which makes them perfect transition wines as we start seeing warmer days on the calendar. Highly recommend this wine!

Winery Details

The Gober & Freinbichler Vineyard Project 004 is the fourth Vineyard Project of wine importer Vom Boden; a series of collaborations undertaken "as a way of connecting soulful yet overlooked vineyards with soulful growers." This project connects Dominik Gober and Gerald Freinbichler, two young growers that have started up a winery in Burgenland, Austria. Together, they are buying up vineyards for cheap from co-op members (due to low demand) and improving the farming methods to make the vineyards economically viable and qualitatively better. Their goal is to make Blaufränkisch that shows Burgenland is more than a region with heavy soils and warm weather that produces fat wines. All grapes are farmed organically, with certification pending in 2021.

Domink and Gerald met in the famous cellar of Franz Weninger, where they worked together learning from one of Austria's most well-regarded producers. With Franz’s encouragement, they decided to bring back to life an old 1,000-square-foot garage winery and a few hectares of Blaufränkisch vineyards. The 2020 Gober & Freinbichler Blaufränkisch has fruit from two villages in Burgenlaned, Neckenmarkt and Horitschon, exactly half from each: the Neckenmarkt half brings minerality, crisp fruit flavors and spice while the fruit from Horitschon brings body, fine grain tannin texture and vibrant acidity. Impeccably balanced with aromas and flavors of crunchy red fruits, flowers, spice, smoke and earth.
