Domaine des Griffes is located in the south of France in Nizas. The estate and the cellar are located in the heart of the town, while the vineyards are located at few kilometers outside of the town. Domaine des Griffes got its name from the fountains located in the center of Nizas, which are called Griffes. As such, the house and the cellar are in this place as the fountains, which make for a well fitted name.
Heir from the family tradition, Charles-André Jany, the owner and the winemaker of Domaine des Griffes is doing a "passion" job; passion that he has since he is young. At 10 years old, Charles was the assistant of his grandfather who made wine for his pleasure. Charles wanted to become a winemaker just like his grandfather, which is why he obtained his degree in oenology. After his degree in oenology, Charles has done his tour as an assistant winemaker throughout France which allowed him to increased his knowledge from prestigious cellar such as in Bordeaux (Entre-Deux-Mers and Médoc), Côtes du Rhône (Côte Rotie and Gigondas), Alsace, but also abroad in South Africa and in Turkey..
After having inheriting the vines from his grandfather, he restructured whole vineyards, field by field, grape by grape, and he bought new vineyards. Today, Charles still passionate about with his vineyards, he is now working on his own estate as a full job.
The vineyard is now totaling 18 hectares. The vines average 30 years old, they are located on the last counterforts of les Cévennes. Because of its soils which are caly and limestone, and basalt, and its Mediterranean climate: a bit windy, sunny, this area are ideal to make very good wines.
