Onda Anomola, meaning “abnormal wave”, is a 100% Montepulciano d’Abbruzzo with a two day maceration that shows all the sun and oceanic breezes of its native Abruzzo. Basically, a darker, slightly more textural rosé, or some would even consider this a light red. It has an intense light red, dark pink color, is medium-bodied, with notes of strawberries, oranges, cherries, cranberries and a hint of oregano that fills the mouth. The blend of oranges and cranberries really makes this the perfect warm weather crusher. Oh so fresh and oh so delicious.
“My name is Enzo, I am the owner and winemaker of Controvento. Controvento is a small winery from Abruzzo. The company was founded by my father in 1978. I took control of the company 11 years ago and have been the sole proprietor and winemaker ever since. The vineyard spans a total of 5 hectares and is situated inside the protected area of “Fosso delle Farfalle” in the town of Rocca San Giovanni, just off the Adriatic Sea in Abruzzo. The vineyard has 1 newer section totaling another hectare with vines planted 5 years ago. The vines of my farm are between 21 and 23 years old. Grape varietals are mostly Montepulciano d’ Abruzzo and Trebbiano, but Fiano, Passerina, Malvasia and Cabernet all exist in smaller quantities. Controvento is certified organic, and 100% Natural. We use absolutely no chemicals on our vines and in our cellar no addition or manipulation of any kind is done during the vinification process. Meaning “upwind” in Italian, Controvento is a 5 hectare vineyard in the Rocca San Giovanni region of Abruzzo just kilometers off the Adriatic Sea. Enzo’s farm, situated partially in a valley with the backdrop of the beautiful Adriatic in the distance, is a completely biological organically-run vineyard.
Vines growing seven varietals all on calcareous soil are cooled by the salty sea breeze. The vines are fertilized with only winter green manure and are primed under falling moon. Zero chemicals of any kind are ever used. Enzo’s philosophy of wine making is strict, allowing the grape to flourish in each and every bottle.
Enzo once said that he wanted to make wines like his grandfather did, in the purest possible form. Enzo never fines, clarifies, filters, or uses and SO2 and always allows for spontaneous fermentation.
