2019 Marinferno 'Foglianella' Emilia Bianco IGT: Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Tasting Notes

Golden, with coppery shades. The nose is expressed with hints of withered yellow flowers and notes of wild aromatic herbs. On the palate it is fresh, rustic and savory, yet juicy with excellent persistence.

Winery Details

Marinferno is a project born in 2016 to give a new course to a historic farm in the Piacenza area located in Vicobarone, in Val Tidone, in the heart of the Piacenza hills. The Monferrina farm has in fact feudal origins and has belonged to the G. Sforza Fogliani family since 1500. It is located in the ancient village of Vicobarone, in Val Tidone, on the Piacentini hills, between Emilia Romagna and Lombardy and, the whole property, includes 50 hectares of land and a villa from the early twentieth century, in the center of the town, in front of the seventeenth-century Oratory of San Rocco.

Monferrina, recognized as a "historic company" in the area, has always been dedicated to the production of wine; At the beginning of the twentieth century, the main focus was on the sale of grapes, then in the forties, the business moved to bulk wine of its own production and bottling began in the sixties. The year of the real turning point was, however, 2016; the latter, in fact, saw the winery reborn with a new project, which also provides for the conversion to organic and which combines wine, landscape and creativity, in order to produce artisanal wines, expression of the territory. Marinferno is the anagram of “Monferrina”, the historical name of the farm and the prime mover of this project.

The owned vineyards are spread over the land of two farms, Badenigo and Solana, at an altitude between 160 and 250 meters, for a total of 18 hectares, with South-East and South-West exposure. The soil has a strong clayey matrix, with a good limestone content, ideal for mineral white wines rich in aromas and structured and full-bodied red wines. At Marinferno aromatic Malvasia di Candia, Ortrugo, Barbera, Bonarda and Pinot Nero are grown. The Marinferno brand produces wines - from organic farming - “naturally unkempt” and is a member of FIVI, the Italian Federation of Independent Winegrowers.

The range therefore includes "Foglianella", obtained from overripe Ortrugo and Chardonnay grapes, pressed whole with soft pressing; the "Sforzino", from Barbera and Croatina grapes harvested in different periods; the "Spigone", macerated white wine, obtained with Malvasia di Candia and Ortrugo grapes; "La Fame", harmonious and complex wine, with a great emotional impact, produced from old Barbera vineyards.
