2016 Domaine Roger et Didier Raimbault ‘Côteline’ Sancerre: Loire Valley, France


Tasting Notes

The 2016 Sancerre ‘Côteline’ is considered the 'cru' of Sancerre to some folks. Produced from a single vineyard with 40º slopes. Rich minerals, with a poor topsoil quality makes puts the vineyard at an advantage, producing more powerful wines.  In order to harness its full potential, the Raimbaults aged it in 500-litre casks. The result is a complex, mineral-driven wine with a nose of floral, exotic, and complex aromas, met with a full-bodied palate with a freshness that leads into notes of dried pineapple, preserved lime, peaches, smoky flint and brioche. Lengthy opening on the palate reveals the complexity of the terroir, with a touch of well-integrated oak. An absolute must try bucket list wine.

“The Raimbault family has been growing grapes in the Verdigny district of France for ten generations. Experience, technical know-how and nature combine to allow us to produce wines of great quality, respecting the typical characteristics of each vintage. The estate is located in the heart of the Sancerre vineyard.

In order for the terroir to express itself fully, the vines need to be maintained and looked after all year round. In two thirds of the vineyard area, we work the soil, and carry out griffage (a technique used to get rid of weeds). The other third is covered with grass to prevent erosion taking place on the steep slopes. Each parcel is fertilized depending on soil analyses and when the vigor of the vines has been accessed. We only treat our vines if there is a real risk of vine diseases introduced by parasites, a type of viticulture known as Lutte raisonnée (sustainable farming). In order to make good and great wine, you need lovely quality grapes. Vine cultivation has been in the Raimbault family since the seventeenth century. The domain is a result of a merger between a father and son in 1996 bringing together a property that totals 17.5 ha with 80% of the vines on the sharp 10-35° slopes in the communes of Verdigny and Sur yen Vaux.

On hills that are 200 to 400 meters high, the vineyards receive prime exposure to the sun. Spanning two out of three of the region’s noted terroirs: terre blanche and les caillottes. Terre blanche is a calcareous clay with Kimmeridgian limestone laying mostly in the west of the appellation that yields powerful, full-bodied wines. Les caillottes is a calcareous mix with limestone and gravel yielding aromatic and youthful wines. A new winery was completed in 2005. Integrated into the hillside, it spans three levels to accommodate gravity flow throughout the winemaking process.
