2016 Château du Gazin Canon Fronsac: Bordeaux, France

Tasting Notes

Big yet elegant red Bordeaux. Notes of dark berry, mocha and smoked oak. It's excellent balance and tannin structure make this a very approachable wine that can easily be enjoyed now, or aged if you're looking for something to hold onto a bit.  Aging this wine will allow for it to further its complexity and soften its tannins. Enjoy now or lay the wine to rest on its side in a cool, dark place to enjoy in a few years.  


Winery Details

The Château du Gazin is located on the famous Right Bank alongside the Saint Emilion and Pomerol appellations. It hides in a superb valley which cuts through the Fronsadais plateau and overlooks the course of the Dordogne.

Built in 1532, this former seigneury already produces great wines thanks to its exceptional terroir. In 1715, under the leadership of Anne Bayard, the Château and the cellars as we know them today emerged. Only the original dovecote is preserved.

The estate was acquired in 1935 by Georges Robert, originally from Burgundy. Demobilized in Libourne at the end of the 14-18 war, he settled there. First a wine merchant, he later acquired several properties including the Château du Gazin. His nephew Henri took over at the end of the 1960s.

In 2004, Georges-Antoine, then 25 years old, took over the reins. The domain is then in bad shape and it is necessary to take up many challenges with limited means. The bet has been met and the Château du Gazin now produces consistent, quality wines that reap...sorry...harvest the rewards.
