This wine is an excellent gateway to Côtes-du-Rhône! The warmth of the Grenache and the aromatic power of the Syrah really do a great job at representing the appellation. The blend gives this wine a complexity of red and black fruits mixed with fine tannins. After a few swirls, this wine will evolve towards a wild nose of ‘garrigue’ and spices, such as Herbes de Provence and gray peppercorn. This is actually a wine that we had during our time traveling in France!
Domaine du Jas is located between the Castle of Grignan made famous by Madame de Sevigne and the Château de Suze la Rousse from the XI th century, home to the prestigious University of wine.
In the heart of the vineyard, the cellar is located in the southern part of the Côtes du Rhône, in Suze-la-Rousse (Drôme Provençale).
Hubert Pradelle readily works with northern grape varieties such as Syrah for the red and Viognier for the white in addition to the traditional grape varieties of the region: Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Grenache blanc… In total the estate is made up of 38 ha of vines in appellation Côtes-du-Rhône, Côtes-du-Rhône Villages and, recently, Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Visan. The distribution is 8 ha of white and 30 ha of red.
The estate has been in the same family since 1874. It was in 1978 that Raphaël Pradelle vinified his own wine for the first time. Soon his sons joined him and Hubert Pradelle began his activity as a winegrower. Like his father before him, he takes care of his vines according to the precepts of organic farming and grapes everything by hand.
Respect for nature and passion for wine are indeed the two fundamental principles of his work. So he opted for the AB certification (Organic Agriculture) in 2001. Today, the Domaine du Jas still has its family and authentic character: Hubert works with his wife Anne-Marie and their eldest son Pierre.
In turn, Pierre Pradelle brings his own sensitivity to vines and wine by opening up to Biodynamics. This new approach is based on "the enhancement of the soil and the plant in its natural environment thanks to preparations made from plant, animal and mineral materials applied at specific times".
Pierre and Hubert Pradelle's commitment to Biodynamics can be explained by successful experiences in practice. Concretely, this translates into homemade preparations (nettle manure, silica, etc.) and compliance with the biodynamic calendar to carry out the main work in the vineyard and in the wine. This approach is one more step towards respecting the consumer and the environment.
